TAYLORS Lakes resident Sarah Leung said people who want to become film editors need patience and passion to succeed in a tough industry.
“My ultimate dream would be to edit big-time Hollywood movies or work in any kind of post-production,” Ms Leung said.
“It’s such a hard industry to get into, there are so many people trying.”
The 24-year-old freelance film-editor has completed an advanced diploma in Multimedia at Victoria University in St Albans, before studying film production at Footscray City College.
Ms Leung said after leaving school, she initially wanted to become an animator because she loved Japanese cartoons known as anime.
She has worked on several projects over the past few years, the latest an independent short film called Honey Pot, which explores how the relationship between two people changes themselves and each other.
Ms Leung said she begins each project with a short-list or story board of scenes and goes on to transform raw footage, filmed from many different angles, into a coherent whole.
“One thing I like about editing is seeing the project come to life and seeing it flow,” Ms Leung said.
Last year, she worked on special effects for a music video titled Remix This and edited a documentary called State of the World.
“I was pretty happy with that, just because of the concept. It was a wake-up call and shows how cultures have a different point-of-view on how the world is changing,” Ms Leung said.
While at university, she wrote the script for an anime series called Society’s Enemy, which she hopes to make into a series.
The multi-talented woman, who creates websites, has been a kung-fu instructor and also paints.
Ms Leung also wants to travel to Japan to teach English, before returning to Australia to pursue her film editing career.
