A BOX full of puppies left for dead on a roadside could always find refuge at Alice Jones’ side.

The abandoned, week-old and malnourished pups were found dumped on nearby streets or shelters.

“My father was an animal lover and he would bring home a box of dogs or kittens and ask me to look after them,” she said.

“These were puppies not even old enough to be taken away from their mothers.

“I would then nurse them back to health.

“My mum used to freak out but I thought they were so cute.”

Her passion for animals as a child has not wavered with age.

Alice volunteers at Pets Haven Animal Shelter in Woodend every week.

Walking dogs, feeding cats and answering phones is all in a days work.

“Every time you think you are winning you are actually not because so many keep turning up on the doorstep abandoned overnight needing to be re-homed,” she said.

To help the plight of these animals Alice is holding a garage sale and donating all proceeds to the shelter.

The sale will be held on 31 July and 1 August at 11 Oleander Drive, Hoppers Crossing from 8am to 3pm.

Any donations of dog and cat food and blankets are also welcome.
