ALTONA Meadows student Thea Canonigo knows a thing or two about studying.

The Mount St Joseph’s Girls College student recently won the George Stone Educational Award in the Master Plumbers’ and Mechanical Services Associations of Australia Gold Medal and Training Awards.

The 15-year-old said her Year 10 co-ordinator encouraged her to apply for the award.

“I was quite surprised. I didn’t really expect it so that’s why I was so shocked,” she said.

Thea has a strong history of academic awards, she was Dux in both Years 7 and 8, she won the Italian poetry competition on behalf of her school, and has received numerous other school awards for science, Italian and religion.

“I definitely want to be really successful in my VCE scores and all,” she said.

“I want to go to uni and get a good paid job and be successful, that’s the plan.”

She said the key to her success had been ensuring she was not distracted.

“If you really have an important test, just study, be focused, be determined, set your goals and achieve them. And make sure they are achievable otherwise you might be sad if you failed,” she said.

But she said it should also be fun.

“Always enjoy and just strive to be your best, and do your best and just try, always try,” she said.

Thea hopes to one day work in the medical field.
