Jan Wilson will be farewelled at Sandown Racecourse on Monday.

NOBLE Park has lost a gem. Hands-on community member and resident for over 40 years, Jan Wilson peacefully passed away on Friday at the Ballarat Base Hospital after a short illness.

Last year Ms Wilson, a former City of Greater Dandenong councillor, was appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia and said receiving the recognition was a shock.

“It was surprising to hear at first,” Ms Wilson said at the time.

“But after working as a councillor and in parliament I feel I have a good link with the community.”

She was also the chairwoman of Greyhound Racing Victoria before retiring late last year to Ballarat to be closer to her son Craig, who owns three newspapers in the area. She was appointed as president of the world greyhound racing federation in 2007.

The funeral service for Ms Wilson will be held on Monday 14 March at the Function Centre, Sandown Greyhound Complex, View Road, Springvale at 1.30pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the McGrath Foundation. Envelopes will be available. The service will be followed by a private cremation.
