AFTER about four months residents living near Chambers Rd are still waiting to see whether their petition achieved anything, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

Altona resident Geoff Mitchelmore submitted a petition to council with about 30 signatures in a hope to close Chambers Rd. He said the area’s heavy truck traffic was disturbing residents.

“This is probably one of the worst traffic truck areas in Hobsons Bay in the McArthurs Rd and Chambers Rd area,” he said.

“We think the council should be looking at the alternative routes for those trucks rather than the residential area.”

But Hobsons Bay City Council director of works and assets Phillip McDonalds said the council would be conducting further traffic counts in the area and liaising with key businesses to encourage as many trucks as possible to use the Barnes Road Bridge.

Mr McDonalds said the council would conduct its traffic counts for the Chambers Rd area in April/May.

“The council also noted that the development of the former Cabot site will provide a new road access between Chambers and Millers roads, which can be used by many trucks in lieu of McArthurs Road to access industries in Chambers Road.”

Mr Mitchelmore said the traffic had been getting worse and that residents had been putting up with it for the last 15 years.
