FOOTSCRAY has had one of its wettest starts to 2010 in recent years, taking in 69mm of rain since 1 January.
February’s wild weather saw Footscray take in 44.6mm for the month, with 29.4mm of it falling on 12 February, Melbourne Water figures show.
Flooding on that day caused the evacuation of Yarra West Aged Care Facility and a childcare centre in Maribyrnong, and a partial evacuation of the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre.
The drenching is in stark contrast to 2009 when Footscray suffered one of its lowest rainfall figures on record, taking in only 6.4mm this time last year.
Rainfall for the first three months of the year has fluctuated wildly in recent years across the municipality, with Footscray and Maribyrnong recording more than 200mm of rain in the summer of 2005.
Latest figures from Melbourne Water show that Victoria’s water catchments received the most summer rain in five years, with 231mm of rain.
Melbourne’s water storages are currently at 34.9 per cent, up from 30.9 per cent at the same time last year.
Footscray’s rainfall has no impact on water storages.
