A FIERCE hailstorm lashed Wyndham homes last weekend, as ceilings caved in and hallways flooded.

SES volunteers had all hands on deck over the past two days with more than 6010 requests for assistance.

Werribee unit controller Laurie Russell said his crew were kept under the pump, helping 30 households across the municipality.

“Everybody is feeling fairly exhausted,” he said. “There was water entering properties through roofs and downpipes. In some homes we had to puncture the ceilings and let the water through.”

Mr Russell said the main streets were flooded but subsided quickly.

The Werribee Fire Brigade also offered support as the rain continued to bucket down. More than 23.6mm of rainfall blanked Wyndham. Mr Russell said the waterways in Manor Lakes and Wyndham Vale were now running at capacity.

“Many people have not seen water in the streams since they moved here,” he said.

“Now that the catchments are saturated they will continue to run.

“People have to be aware of it where kids are concerned.”

His team also answered calls for help in Footscray, Knox and Melton.

“When you get a storm it affects everyone, not just one individual,” he said.
