DON Deeble nominee Sam Morris’ baseball career got another push in the right direction recently after he received a scholarship offer to the Major League Baseball Australian Academy program (MLBAAP).
The offer, Morris’ second in as many years will see the Altona North resident head to the Gold Coast where he will take part in the world class intensive training program.
Morris will fly north for the seven-week program in May.
DELAHEY’S Viktorija Rajicic made the quarter-finals in the Homebush Women’s International main draw tournament in Sydney last week.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament contained a large number of international and Australian players, including number one seed Jarmila Groth and Casey Dellacqua.
Rajicic. 14, qualified to the main draw without dropping a set, and led fourth seed Rika Fujiwara 7-5 2-2 in round one before the Japanese player retired injured.
Rajicic then went on to beat Australian Daniela Scivetti 6-2 6-3 before bowing out in the quarter-finals to Japanese sixth seed Ryoko Fuda by the same scoreline.
Williamstown’s Molly Polak was also in the qualifying draw at Sydney, but went down to an opponent five years her senior in straight sets in her first match.

GRASSROOTS sporting associations will be required to take a zero tolerance approach to bad behaviour and violence according to a new Victorian Code of Conduct for Community Sport.
Sports Minister James Merlino said Victoria’s 16,000 community sporting clubs would need to comply with the accord, which sets strong standards for players, spectators and officials.
Merlino said breaches to the code included violent or abusive behaviour, vilification of any kind towards another person, discrimination based on age, gender, sexual orientation, race, culture or religion, sexual harassment or intimidation and failure to maintain a safe environment.
Mr Merlino said Victoria’s 84 sporting associations must sign up to the new Code of Conduct by 1 July 2010 or they will not receive funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria.
THE Victorian Junior Basketball League will team up with beyondblue: the national depression initiative, as the League’s chosen charity for the 2010 Aussie Oranges Championship Season.
The VJBL and beyondblue will run a number of different activities throughout the season aimed to raise awareness of depression and anxiety disorders.
